Nak Nak 여섯 번째 인터뷰, 싱가포르에서 디자이너로 일하고 있는 회원 Lindie 님과 이야기를 나눴습니다. 남아프리카공화국에서 태어나 세계 각국에서 생활한 Lindie 님은 유튜브 채널에 언어 학습 관련 영상을 활발하게 올려주고 계십니다. Lindie 님의 채널을 보면 언어에 대한 애정과 학구열이 고스란히 느껴지는 데요. 그중에서도 Lindie 님이 열 가지 언어로 자기소개하는 영상은 적잖은 놀라움을 안겨주었던 걸로 기억합니다.
그런데 여러분들 중 이미 Lindie 님을 본 적 있는 분이 있을지도 모르겠습니다. 아래에서 소개하겠지만, 국내에서 유명세를 얻은 영상의 주인공이기도 하거든요. 어떤 영상일지 한 번쯤 추측해주시기를 바라며. Lindie 님께 다양한 언어를 학습하게 된 계기부터 현재, 그리고 싱가포르에 사는 이야기를 들어봤습니다.

안녕하세요, 간단하게 자기소개를 부탁드립니다.
Please briefly introduce yourself.
안녕하세요. 남아프리카공화국에서 태어나 현재 UI/UX 디자이너로 일하고 있는 린디 보테스(Lindie Botes)입니다. 프랑스, 파키스탄, 아랍에미리트, 그리고 일본에서 살았으며, 지금은 싱가포르에서 일하고 있어요. 취미로 한국어 공부를 시작한 게 2010년이었는데, 그때부터 언어에 대한 흥미가 생겨 일본어, 중국어, 스페인어, 프랑스어, 아랍어, 베트남어, 힌디어, 헝가리어, 말레이어 같은 다양한 언어를 공부했습니다. 구사할 수 있는 수준은 조금씩 다르지만요. 시간이 날 때는 온라인으로 언어를 가르치거나, 언어 학습에 관한 영상을 제작해 올리고 있습니다.
My name is Lindie Botes and I'm a UI/UX designer born in South Africa. I have lived in France, Pakistan, the UAE and Japan, and now I'm working in Singapore. As a hobby, I started learning Korean in 2010. Since then my love for languages has grown and I've learnt Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, Arabic, Vietnamese, Hindi, Hungarian, Malay and others to varying levels. I understand you are from South Africa. Could you introduce yourself again in Afrikaans?
My naam is Lindie Botes en ek is 'n inligtingsontwerper van Suid-Afrika. Ek het gebly in Pakistan, die Verenigde Emirate en Japan, en tans werk ek in Singapoer. As 'n stokperdjie het ek in 2010 begin Koreaans leer. Van toe af het my liefde vir taal gegroei en ek het Japanees, Sjinees, Spaans, Fraans, Arabies, Vietnamees, Hindi, Hongaars en Maleisies tot verskeie vlakke geleer. In my spaartyd gee ek taallesse aanlyn en ek maak video's oor taalleer.
유튜브 영상을 활발하게 만들고 계십니다. 언제, 어떤 계기로 유튜브를 시작하셨나요?
We see that you are very active with making YouTube videos. Can you tell us when and how you started creating your YouTube clips?
유튜브를 시작한 건 고등학교 3학년 때였는데, 그때부터 영상을 활발하게 올린 건 아니에요. 그 당시만 해도 유튜브는 얼마나 공부했는지 점검하고, 저처럼 외국어를 공부하고 있는 사람들을 만날 수 있는 장소 정도로 생각했거든요.
I started in my last year of high school but didn't upload regularly - I just saw it as a space to keep track of my language learning progress and meet other language learners.

당시 국내 온라인 커뮤니티 등에 퍼졌는데, 그 조회수가 500만 회가 넘는다.
그런데 2017년, 제 영상 하나가 널리 퍼지면서부터 영상 올리는 일을 진지하게 생각하게 되었습니다. 영상도 좀 더 규칙적으로 올리기 시작했고요. 그러다 보니 제 채널을 찾는 사람들이 늘었고, 언어에 관심이 있는 많은 사람을 만날 수 있었어요.
Only after one of my videos went viral in 2017 did I start taking it seriously and uploading more regularly, and with that the community grew and I met more people interested in languages.
여러 언어를 유창하게 구사할 수 있으십니다. 처음 배우신 외국어는 무엇이고, 어떤 계기로 배우게 되었나요? 그리고 각 언어의 어떤 점에 이끌려 배우게 되었는지 궁금합니다.
We see that you are fluent in many languages. What was the first foreign language you learned, and how did you come to learning this language? We are curious of the reasons why you have chosen such languages to study.
처음 배운 외국어는 프랑스어예요. 파키스탄, 아랍에미리트 그리고 남아공에서 학교 다닐 때 수업을 들었거든요. 근데 그때는 ‘학교 과목’ 그 이상, 이하도 아니었어요. 외려 독학한 한국어가 더 빨리 늘었습니다. 한국어와 문화에 관심이 많았거든요.
I took French throughout my school years (in Pakistan, the UAE and South Africa). I only saw it as a school subject and although I did well in it, I self-studied Korean much faster since I was way more interested in the language and culture.
한국어를 배워야겠다고 생각한 건 학교에서 한국 친구들을 사귀면서부터인데, 그때는 아는 게 별로 없었어요. 음식이랑 문화에 대해 약간 아는 정도? 그러다 2010년 한국에 가서 한국의 문화, 음악, 그리고 디자인에 푹 빠졌고, 그 이후로 한국어 공부를 더 열심히 했습니다.
I decided to learn Korean because I had a number of Korean friends at school and didn't know anything other than a bit about food and Korean culture. Only after I visited Korea for a holiday in 2010 did I fall in love with the culture, music and design and it motivated me to work harder on my Korean studies.

한국어를 공부하시며 한국 유저들과도 활발히 소통하셨을 것 같은데요. 이때 보이는 한국 유저들의 특징이 있을까요?
You must have been actively communicating with Korean users while studying and uploading Korean spoken videos on Youtube. Where there any characteristics when communicating with Korean users? What were some questions which Korean users often asked and have the tendency to comment.
한국분들의 반응은 아주 긍정적인 편입니다. 한국어를 공부하는 제게 응원도 많이 보내주세요. 가끔가다 “백인은 한국에 속하지 않는다”, “케이팝 때문에 한국어 공부하는 거 아니냐” 같은 댓글이 달리기도 하는데, 그럴 땐 사적으로 받아들이지 않으려고 해요. 한편으로는 외국인이 한국어를 공부하는 이유는 케이팝뿐이라고 생각하는 분들이 많은 것 같기도 합니다.
Koreans are generally very positive in their responses to me learning Korean. They have been very encouraging and friendly. However, sometimes I've been on the receiving end of negative comments like "white people don't belong in Korea" or "You're only learning Korean because of Kpop". I brush these aside and don't let it get to me personally, but it does seem like many Koreans believe foreigners only learn Korean because of Kpop.
물론 그런 분들도 있겠지만, 저처럼 언어 그 자체가 좋아서 공부한 경우도 있거든요. 제가 느끼기에 한국분들은 자기 나라 언어를 배우는 외국인들에게 도움을 아끼지 않고 크게 격려해주는 분들이에요. 비록 영상에 달아주신 모든 댓글에 일일이 답을 드리기는 어렵지만, 제가 한국어 공부를 하다가 난항에 부딪쳤을 때 흔쾌히 도움을 주실 분들이 있다는 사실만으로도 마음이 벅찹니다. 그런 생각을 하다 보면 더 좋은 영상으로 보답해야겠다고 느끼고요.
There are some who do, but others like me who generally started out of a love of languages. I find that Koreans are one of the people groups who are most excited and encouraging to offer assistance to foreigners learning their language. Although I can't individually respond to each comment, it warms my heart knowing there are people out there who are ready to help when I have a question, and that in turn, makes me more motivated to continue creating content that can help them.
다양한 외국어를 공부하면서 자신에게 일어난 가장 큰 변화가 있다면 무엇인가요?
What is the biggest change that has occurred to you since starting studying various foreign languages?
아무래도 구사할 수 있는 언어가 늘어날수록, 식견이 넓어지고 새로운 상황에 더 잘 적응하게 된다고 생각합니다. 그런데 개인적으로 외국어를 공부하면서 경험한 큰 변화는 세상을 보는 눈이 달라졌다거나 효율적인 언어 학습법을 깨우친 게 아니에요. 공부를 하면서 사귀게 된 새로운 친구들이죠. 온라인에서든, 실생활에서든 어떤 언어로 소통하는 공동체에 들어갈 수 있다는 건 매우 기쁜 일이에요.
It is true that the more languages someone speaks, the more their worldview grows and they learn to adapt better to new situations. Apart from widening my perspective on topics and learning how to learn languages more effectively, the biggest change that's occurred in my life is the amount of new friends I've made. I'm happy to be part of a language community online and in real life.
특별히 추천하는 외국어 학습법이 있다면?
Do you have recommended method of learning a foreign language?
완전히 몰두하는 게 제일 중요해요. 언어 공부에 최적화된 라이프스타일을 맞추지 않은 채 일주일에 몇 시간 공부하는 거로는 언어를 빨리 익히기 힘들거든요.
Immersion is most important - you won't progress quickly if you are only doing a few hours a week and not converting your lifestyle into one that accommodates the language.
여러분의 일상을 공부하려는 언어로 바꿔보세요. 만약 영어를 공부한다면, 영어로 된 노래를 듣고, 영어로 된 영화를 보고, 친구와도 영어로 대화하는 거죠. 랭귀지 익스체인지(Language Exchange, 언어 교환 학습)도 좋습니다. 새로운 사람들을 만나 실제 대화에 외국어를 써볼 수 있거든요. 파트너는 직접 만나거나 온라인으로 만날 수 있는데, 이 파트너가 아주 중요합니다. 여러분이 외국어를 쓰다가 실수했을 때 고쳐줄 수 있고, 이제 막 배우기 시작한 상대와도 대화할 수 있는 인내심 가진 분을 찾는 게 좋아요.
Try to change your daily routine to be done in a foreign language - like listening to music in your target language, watching movies and calling friends to practice. Language exchanges are a great way to meet new people and practice using your languages, and you can meet a language partner there or online. Getting a language partner is important. You should find someone who is open to correcting your mistakes, and someone who is patient to talk to you despite you being a beginner.

현재 싱가포르에 계신데요. 어떻게 싱가포르로 가게 되었으며, 그곳에서 현재 어떤 일을 하고 계신가요?
You have recently moved to Singapore. Is there any specific reason you moved to Singapore and what do you do as an occupation.
남아공에서 정체감을 느끼면서 새로운 곳으로 가야 할 때가 되었구나 싶었어요. 여러 나라에 있는 회사들에 이력서를 보냈는데, 제게 문이 열린 건 싱가포르였습니다. 개인적으로는 신의 뜻으로 제가 싱가포르에 왔다고 생각하고 있어요! 이곳에서 UX/UI 디자이너로 일하며 앱과 웹사이트를 만들고 있습니다.
I was feeling stagnant in South Africa and decided it was time to move to a new place. I applied for jobs in a few different countries, and the door that opened was Singapore, so I believe God wants me in Singapore for a reason! I work as a UI/UX designer, so I make apps and websites.
싱가포르 생활은 어떠세요?
How is life in Singapore?
나쁘지 않은 것 같아요. 일단 습하고 더운 나라들에 익숙해서 그런지, 싱가포르는 굉장히 쾌적하네요. 직장 생활도 즐겁고, 좋은 친구들도 많이 사귀었습니다. 나라가 작다 보니 심심할 때가 있지만, 다행히 가까운 나라로 여행가기가 쉬워요.
Not too hot - I'm used to humid and hot countries, so I'm enjoying it here. I'm happy at work and have a great circle of friends. Sometimes I get bored because the country is so small, but it's easy to travel to nearby countries.

Lindie 님이 나고 자란 남아공은 어떤 곳이었나요? 해외에서 생활하는 동안 ’고향의 이건 정말 그립다’ 하는 게 있으신가요?
A country where you were born and raised, what was South Africa like? Do you have anything that makes you 'home-sick'? Maybe things such as food, scenery, people and culture.
남아공에서 태어난 건 맞는데 아기일 때 파리로 이사를 하였어요. 초등학교는 이슬라마바드(파키스탄)에서 다니다가 남아공으로 돌아가 2년 정도 보냈고요. 그리고는 두바이로 이사를 가 그곳에서 고등학교에 다니기 시작했어요. 그러다가 다시 남아공에 가 고등학교를 졸업하고 대학교에 다녔습니다. 그래서 ‘자라난 곳’이라면 남아공보다는 두바이나 파키스탄이 더 적당할 것 같아요.
(I was born in South Africa but wasn't really raised there. We moved to Paris when I was a baby, and then I spent elementary school partly in Islamabad (Pakistan), back in South Africa for 2 years, and then moved to Dubai where I started high school. I graduated high school and did university in South Africa, but I think "growing up" refers to formative years, so in my case, Pakistan and Dubai.)
그렇지만 남아공에서의 대학 시절과 직장 생활을 되돌아보면, 넗은 평지와 아름다운 자연이 정말 그립습니다. 싱가포르로 이사 오기 전, 새해를 맞아 부모님과 남아공 골든 게이트 국립공원에 갔었는데, 그곳에서 본 협곡은 믿을 수 없을 정도로 아름다웠어요. 결혼하면 꼭 여기로 신혼여행을 와야겠다고 결심할 정도였으니까요!
However, thinking back over the past few years when I was a university student and during my first two years of working as a designer in South Africa, I really do miss the wide open spaces and beautiful nature scenery. Before my move to Singapore, my parents and I went to Golden Gate National Park in South Africa for New Year's. The canyon is incredibly beautiful - so much so that I decided once I get married, my husband and I should go there for our honeymoon!
그리고 남아공 사람들 대부분은 모르는 사람들과도 편하게 인사를 나눌 만큼 사교적이고 친절해요. 그래서 그런지, (남아공과 비교하면) 낯선 상대를 경계하는 싱가포르 사람들에게 적응하기까지 시간이 좀 걸렸습니다. 가게에 들어가는 상황이라면 싱가포르에선 주인이나 점원이 손님을 막 반기지 않는데, 남아공에서는 꼭 친구처럼 반겨주거든요.
Food-wise, I usually cook for myself and don't find myself missing much. South Africans are extremely friendly and everyone greets everyone, so sometimes living in Singapore where people are more reserved towards strangers took some getting used to (i.e. shopkeepers and cashiers don't really greet you here, whereas in South Africa they might greet you in a very friendly manner!)
싱가포르에서 또 다른 국가로 이동할 계획이 있으신가요?
Do you have any plans to move from Singapore to another country in the near future?
아마도요! 어렸을 때부터 이 나라 저 나라를 옮겨 다녀서 그런지 새로운 나라에 가서 적응하는 게 편하고 좋아요. 그렇지만 지금은 싱가포르에서 하는 일이 만족스럽고, 교회와 랭귀지 익스체인지 그룹에서 좋은 친구들을 많이 사귀어서 갈 생각이 딱히 들지 않아요. 좋은 기회를 통해 새로운 나라로 갈 기회가 있을지 모르지만, 현재는 싱가포르가 제 집이에요.
Perhaps! It's in my blood to move countries, and I'm very comfortable to relocate overseas if the opportunity arises. However, right now I'm very happy at my job and I have a lovely circle of friends at church and language exchange. Maybe one day I'll explore a new country, but for now, Singapore is my home.

올해 하반기 계획은 어떻게 되시나요? 새로운 언어를 더 익힐 계획이 있다면, 어떤 언어인지 궁금합니다.
What are your plans for the second half of this year? If you are planning on learning a new language we would love to hear about it.
인도네시아 출장을 앞두고 있어서 그 전까지 인도네시아어를 공부할 계획입니다. 또 내년에 JLPT N2에 합격하는 게 목표라 일본어 공부도 꾸준히 하려고요. 물론 한국어 실력도 닳지 않게 계속 공부할 거고요. 헝가리어도 이어서 공부하겠지만, 올해는 일때문에 그리 많은 시간을 투자하진 못할 것 같아요. 아마 내년엔 시간을 낼 수 있을지도요! 그리고 10월에는 폴리글롯(Polyglot, 다언어 구사자) 컨퍼런스 때문에 일본 후쿠오카에 가게 되었는데요. 그곳에서 전 세계의 폴리글롯 분들, 학습자들의 연설을 듣고 이야기할 게 벌써 기대됩니다.
I have an upcoming work trip to Indonesia, so I might improve my Indonesian before then. I'd like to keep up my Japanese to take the JLPT N2 next year, and of course, keep my Korean at a fluent level so I don't get stagnant. I've been thinking of continuing with Hungarian, but with work commitments I don't have much time this year. Maybe next year! I am also traveling to Fukuoka for the Polyglot Conference in October - I look forward to networking and hearing all the speeches from inspiring polyglots and language learners!

My words for you would be to keep going with your goals and remember to make small bit consistent progress - people are usually disillusioned when they see online polyglots and think that it should be easy and quick, but what they don't see behind the scenes is that it takes a lot of time, effort and motivation.
